simon robinsonA few years ago Simon Robinson was running RPM Records with his business partner Mark, a reissue label which is still going strong but now part of the Cherry Red empire. Out of this arose Thunderbird Records, a contemporary label, which handled acts like Steve Howe, The Lovebirds (with the guitar talents of Richard Hawley), Snowy White and the wonderful Comsat Angels.

From that grew English Electric which was designed for more ‘out there’ projects but had barely got off the ground with a couple of esoteric ambient music titles from Steve Fellow and Chris Meloche when Simon got pulled into some fairly hefty and time consuming reissue projects for EMI and others (as well as the rock label Purple Records).

But English Electric has always been something he wanted to reactivate, so here we are, with brother Nick Robinson supplying the kick up the fundament and some great local music projects to inspire. You can download all the MP3s you want, but nothing quite beats the pleasure of a proper disc, nicely packaged, and properly mastered. We are relaunching the label with two releases, the first being Andy “Chickenlegs” Weaver’s album Sometime Man, the second being Cotyledon, the debut from Lost Garden with ex-Comsats Andy Peake on keyboards and Nick on guitar.

More contemporary titles are in the pipeline and the intention is also to dip back into Sheffield indie music history for some gems as well. Please join our mailing list to keep up to date with news, details of new releases, live performances and more.
